Course Spotlight: AI, Emerging Tech & Policy, A Professional Development Bootcamp

Over four days, AI, Emerging Tech & Policy, imparts core tech policy skills and knowledge tailored for policy practitioners working across the Australian tech ecosystem.  

This interdisciplinary course focuses on the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of tech policy design and practice, including a methodological framework and guiding principles for best-practice policy design and deep dives into contemporary technologies and tech policy issues. 

Co-designed by practitioners for practitioners, this course builds theoretical and practical skills and knowledge at the intersection of public policy, law, technology and society, and establishes the foundation for best-practice tech policy. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to: 

  • Apply best-practice tech policy design skills, harnessing the TPDi Tech Policy Design Process and Principles 
  • Understand key policy issues and core technologies influencing contemporary tech policy and their implications for society 
  • Identify and engage with diverse stakeholders across Australia’s tech ecosystem to foster co- designed and collaborative tech policy.

The course targets individuals passionate about harnessing policy as a tool to shape technology for the benefit of humanity. It is recommended for APS EL1 and EL2 policy officers, industry professionals, civil society members and academics of similar levels.

Course Outline – Zoomed In 

Day One introduces participants to the course, the cohort, and Tech Policy 101. Uncover your Tech Policy Philosophy, and be introduced the Online Avatar you will inhibit for the 4-days of the course in the interactive Spectrum of Online Experiences exercise. The course then takes its first guided Tech Lab revealing how the Internet actually works, and wraps up with a policy deep dive on Digital Rights.

Day Two focuses on tech policy from an economic and industry perspective. Our second guided Tech Lab demystifies the Tech Stack, Artificial Intelligence, and the Cloud. The a policy deep-dive onto the Innovation Cycle and Tech Business Models. The day concludes with a fireside chat with Frances Haugen, and a pitch panel on the Opportunties of Tech: prepare to be inspired by incredible stories of Australian innovation.

Day Three starts with Geopolitics & Tech Policy, the course then zooms in for sessions on Mis and Dis-information, followed by the State of Play of Tech and Democracy. We then take a deep dive into Quantum Technologies and Wargaming Quantum Policy Futures. Before wrapping up the day examining National Security Tech Threats and a Fireside Chat with Marcus Thompson, delving into the shadows of cyber operations.

Day Four begins by unpacking the policy tensions and ethical dilemmas driving today’s Online Safety debates. We say goodbye to our online avatar, reflecting on what the exercise has taught us about the Spectrum of Online Experiences. We revisit the Tech Policy Process as participants face the ultimate challenge and apply their newly learned knowledge and skills in a culminating Tech Futures Scenario Exercise, demonstrating the power of tech policy to shape a positive future.

Course Fees

AI, Emerging Tech & Policy, A Professional Development Bootcamp is an in-person, catered, four- day intensive course.

Prices per participant is $6,250, plus GST.  

Scholarships

TPDi is proud to offer scholarship positions in each of our professional development courses to help ensure equitable representation in tech policy, particularly for those from underrepresented (and underfunded) groups. These scholarships are supported by our industry funders.

Scholarships will be prioritised for individuals from civil society and those who actively contribute to gender, cultural, First Nations, linguistic, economic, and neurodivergent inclusion. We strongly encourage applications from people whose lived experiences and perspectives are often missing from tech policy discussions.
